Learn Protection In Case Of Attack
Self-Defense Moves Can Save Your Life
PITTSBURGH, 7:40 p.m. EDT May 4, 2001 -- There were almost 20,000 violent crimes in Pittsburgh last year.
WTAE-TV's Michelle Wright learned some self-defense tips from experts.
A self-defense class called Street Smartz teaches defense themselves in case of an attack.
The first lesson is to learn how to anticipate.
Instructors said to make a stern face and act like you're in a bad mood if someone approaches you. If you see someone approaching and you feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts and cross the street.
If an attacker goes after a woman's purse, the woman should throw it and run the other way. The instructors said that women should not carry anything in their purse that they'd be willing to fight for.
In the case of an attempted abduction, a victim should:
- Scream
- Don't get into a car with the attacker. If you do, there is a good chance that you won't be seen again.
- If forced into the car, make a run for it when the abductor attempts to start the engine.
Watch the video clip above to see several advised self-protection moves by the Street Smartz experts.
