Alabama
Birmingham Post-Herald -- A member of the Scripps Howard chain, the Post-Herald publishes a headline summary and most articles from the daily edition. Mobile Register -- The Register apparently is afraid that if they provided the daily news, you wouldn't read the dead-tree copy any more. Ah, well. What they do give is a tease: recent book reviews, columns, special reports and news features. Latest feature: Alabama Forest - Cut Short. The Huntsville Times -- The Times hosts weather, local and national headlines, photos and on-line résumés. A slow-loading site. The Hartselle Enquirer -- Weekly news, features, weather and sports from Morgan County along with a limited classified ad section. The paper's claim to fame? It's printed on recycled electrons. The Southern Shofar -- "Alabama's Only Jewish Newspaper" uses a nicely-done frames site to provides news of interest to the state's Jewish community as well as features including births and obituaries. Also: a calendar of events and an opinion section.
Alaska
The Anchorage Daily News -- The Daily News offers four page-one stories and features from the We Alaskans magazine. Little else leaps out from this site. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner -- This site compiles stories from its weekly newspaper and a photo album on a unique site that simply sends you around the same page. No external links for news or photos. Archive is on the same page. Original.
Arizona
The Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette -- Top stories in a flash, community news, a strong sports section with a golf course directory. Also the Arizona Business Gazette. All in all a nice site. Now: All about AZ ... presumably, from A to Z. The Arizona Star, Tucson -- Also, extensive news stories, many of them with photos or added Internet links. Also -- MenuWeb and Health Beat. The Dispatch section provides a daily feature story and "still fresh" features. And the site's a gateway to merchants doing business on the Web.
Tucson Weekly -- According to this online paper, they've been known to devour sacred cows -- whole. Arts, music, cinema and weekly news features.
Arkansas
The Arkansas Times -- News, sure. But what's more important at this site is cooking, entertainment, wine and a selection of top recent stories.
The Benton County Daily Record -- News, sports and business news from northwest Arkansas which has a booming economy anchored by corporations such as Wal-Mart and J.B. Hunt Trucking. Nice string of stories presented in an up-front manner in all sections. The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas -- The daily grind, a four-day archive of top news stories along with a business and opinion section. A calendar of events and a "living" section also anchor the content. Arkansas Democrat Gazette, Little Rock -- All the standard daily news, weather and sports from the state's largest and oldest (1819) newspaper. There is no shortage of local and state news here. In fact, no shortage of updated content. Site includes an archive of special features along with a photo gallery. -- back to top --
California
The Sacramento Bee -- The state capitol's largest newspaper, the Bee provides daily and breaking news, a movie club and a football prep report. New to the Bee: chat about sports. The L.A. Times -- It's as glossy, hi-tech, and Southern California as anyone could rightly expect. It's also got the paper's news and is updated daily. Now: news from "Wall Street, California." The San Diego Daily Transcript -- The Source has news, weather and the typical information provided by newspapers that want to be a city's gateway to the Internet. The San Diego Union-Tribune -- Sign-On San Diego specializes in real estate information and features, including a special "spotlight" section. Registration's now required. San Francisco Chronicle -- News, business, a sporting guide -- plus a "Bay Area Dining Guide" and a "Farley" comic strip. San Francisco Examiner -- A computer-thinking version of the Examiner, with daily comics and columns. Their newest feature: The Night Cabbie. San Jose Mercury News -- It stands to reason that the newspaper for Silicon Valley would be one of the earliest to hit the net, and one of the best. By far the most technologically savvy. Oakland Tribune -- Summary of dozen or more stories on the front page of this daily. It's a frames site that uses minimal graphics, thus downloads quickly ... Modesto Bee -- There's a top story and breaking news on this paper's site. Also, news about the city and surrounding towns. Business news from the AP and some local reporters. An airy site, that is easy to move through and done with soft, low-key graphics. Very laid back and well put together pages.
Colorado
The Rocky Mountain News -- Almost-daily news, in-depth coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing trial and the JonBenet Ramsey case, and a special section devoted to Dilbert. Now: Back Pages, with previous reports, as well as recreational information. The Pueblo Chieftain -- Local daily news, sports, business and lifestyle from Pueblo, Colorado. New: Farm and Ranch. Boulder News -- The web site for the city's daily newspaper The Daily Camera, this site gives you the goods up front, it's best stories with a short summary on the first page. Those include sports and stories from its "Living" section. Also: weather and an archive of JonBenet Ramsey stories along with an audio archive. Colorado Daily -- They update only every publication day. But they do follow the maxim "local, local, local!" They also link to the city's Campus Press The Denver Post -- Daily news updates, features and an interactive guide to Colorado. Vail Daily -- This daily newspaper includes several main stories along with a couple of features from this Colorado town. The site also includes a sharp front page picture. Telluride Daily Planet -- This site includes an archive of "cover stories" which appear to show up every couple of days. Also, a string of news stories dating back nearly one week along with a photo gallery. Steamboat Pilot -- This 111-year-old paper includes local news, weather and information about this ski resort town.

Connecticut The Chronicle -- Oh, my is the Chronicle ugly. However, it does have reliable daily news, weather and local sports. The Connecticut Post - They boast local daily news, humor, columnists, entertainment and, yes, the police log from southern Connecticut. The Hartford Courant -- News, sports headlines and capsule summaries with links to full stories from the Courant.
The News-Times, Danbury -- News, weather, sports, features and Connecticut Lotto Results. Play: Internet Roulette.
New Haven Register -- Softly-designed site includes and array of stories and a photo on the front page. Also available are sections for sports and weather.
The Record Journal -- This daily newspaper covers central Connecticut and appears to place about one dozen stories on its news page daily. There is a weather page along with a "neighbors section" in case you're interested in the area's bookmobile schedule.
District of Columbia The Washington Post -- The Post provides your total daily requirement of the financial, natinonal and Beltway news. Updated several times a day. The Washington Times -- The Times is heavy on Beltway gossip, politics and opinion. Washington World -- The Washington Post provides this Web site focussing only on local D.C.-area news along with entertainment listings, special reports and "talk."
Florida The Miami Herald -- The Herald is an unbeatable first source for Florida information. Easy-to-use, slick and updated frequently. New: Heraldlink Extra -- news and features designed for the Net. St. Petersburg Times -- The usual, plus a travel guide and "all the weather and weather information you ever wanted." New: a community forum. The Tallahassee Democrat -- The daily news from Florida's capitol. Also, archives, cyberbytes, "Rave Boy" and a treasure hunt. The Florida Times-Union -- Also known as "jacksonville.com," this site is impressive. Well put together, stories seem to appear during the day. There is a community section, sports, business and a family section. It looks like a lot of work went into this site, too much to fall behind on keeping it up. Orlando Sentinel -- Another impressive newspaper site out of Florida. Deep daily lists of stories in a local news section along with business, sports, and features. Editorial page content also on the site. Bonus from what is known as a longtime Twin Cities informal "sister city:" weather and classifieds. Sun-Sentinel -- This site covers "south Florida" and can be a bit confusing if you are trying to find today's news, but it is there under "today's edition." Solid coverage of the Florida Marlins in sports and a community section that includes message boards. Also news from Broward, Dade and Palm counties. Tampa Tribune -- This site packs a lot of info on its front page, which downloads quickly despite the mass of content. There's a string of news stories, a weather center tracking hurricane season, state and metro news sections along with the standard daily newspaper fare. Also: astrology, a Tampa Bay Devil Rays baseball team info and travel information. Worth checking out. Florida Today -- This site offers space news and Space Coast information. Space Online is the main feature of this international award-winning Web site, offering up-to-the-minute coverage of rocket launches from Cape Canaveral and around the world. It's a blast.

Georgia The Augusta Chronicle -- The Chronicle hosts daily news, sports and weather. New: A real-time sports ticker, an online zoo, Interact, ZNET and a section for Kids. The Macon Telegraph -- Daily news, weather, sports and serious business. Plus, "the Peach State's coolest hot links." Athens Daily News -- The Athenaeum, which launched in July and is building brick-by-brick, hosts sports, news, entertainment, op-ed and weather. The newest development: Sportscape and DogBytes, a long look at the Georgia Bulldogs. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution -- At first glance, there doesn't appear to be much on this site, but the paper has joined with a television and radio station to offer updated news, weather and sports.
Hawaii Honolulu Star-Bulletin Online uses their Internet presence well. Clean pictures, clear links, weekday news. Newest feature: Locked Out, a look into the accessibility of local government. West Hawaii Today -- Excellent photos on this site and it looks like it is updated nearly ever day (except when the webmaster is on vacation.) There are also some classified ads, which could provide that "one-of-a-kind" buy that would require an on-site visit to purchase.
Idaho Idaho Post-Register -- We're sad to report: They've taken down their potato section. Now, there's just news, business, books, sports and Yellowstone. The Lewiston Tribune -- The Tribune, which provides daily news and content updates, is free … but they do require registration. New to the site: Idaho and Washington State road reports. Moscow-Pullman Daily News -- This weekday news source is more than one might expect from the tiny town of Moscow, Idaho. Business, sports, palouse palate and a "slice 'o life." Idaho Press-Tribune -- Just under a dozen stories from this daily, including "news of the weird." There is local sports and weather information, too.
Idaho State Journal -- This paper, published in the state's "gateway to the west" has half-a-dozen stories, obituaries, a photo gallery and a local weather forecast.
Illinois The Chicago Tribune -- The Tribune is nearly everything you would expect a major news source to be: frequently-updated, with news, sports and "pet" projects, literally. The Daily Register -- This paper might not have scads of fresh news, but their staff links up a couple new stories each day -- even on weekends. Good local stuff and hometown links from Rockford, Ill. The Daily Herald -- This is "Chicagoland's Largest Suburban Daily" and offers selected stories every day along with news from the state and the region as well as sports and columnists. The News-Gazette Online -- The Urbana newspaper's site covers the home of the University of Illinois. It offers a healthy string of daily stories as well as features and complete coverage of the university's athletic teams. A helpful site for alumni. Online Pioneer Press -- A very interesting site. The cover page provides access to 48 weekly newspapers covering Chicago and its suburbs, each paper with unique local content and a cover photo. Very impressive. The State Journal-Register -- This daily newspaper covers Springfield and central Illinois and claims to be the "oldest newspaper in Illinois." It has local stories, news from the AP wire, sports and weather information. -- back to top --
Indiana The News@Sentinel -- An odd name for a newspaper, but this full-service Fort Wayne publication hosts daily news, personals, an archive, columns and obituaries. Anderson Herald-Bulletin -- News from the daily, with expanded local and state coverage and the ability to see classifieds the night before the paper hits the newsstands. Now: visit the Indiana Online Community Conference Center. Or, say it ten times fast. The Journal and Courier -- A Gannett site from Lafayette, Indiana. Local news, boiler news, sports and a NetGuide. Post-Tribune -- This newspaper covers the city of Valparaiso includes a front-page main feature and eight or so stories updated every day. There's local sports and some weather here too. --> The Evansville Courier -- A daily newspaper web site that is updated with each edition. Has a site editor who puts "the goods" on the front page. Offers the usual fare: news, weather, sports, business, features along with "cheer, jeers & tears," a weekly "web wonder," and an editorial page.
Iowa The Telegraph Herald -- This paper, from Dubuque, offers daily news and vacation information from Iowa's heartland. Viewers also can check in on a year's worth of archives. The Bloomfield Democrat -- News, sports, weather, people and for kids -- a homework helper. The Sioux City Journal -- Daily news, online coupons, bible verses and links to external weather sites. Also, an "almanac," which showcases the week's births, arrests and traffic violations. New: Champs' Corner. The Icon, Iowa City -- An entertainment weekly, The Icon offers news, editorials, reviews and "The Best of Iowa City." Also, a link to "real astrology." Bedford Times-Press -- This paper has been serving Bedford and Tyler counties for more than 124 years. Agriculture news here along with a few headlines from this weekly and a "people" section along with a ... "ham radio page?" There's also a link to "heartland net." -- back to top --
